Monique Lugo-López, AIA, CAAPPR

Monique Lugo-López is the President and Chief Operating Officer of Álvarez-Díaz & Villalón.

Monique Lugo-López is a NCARB certified, registered architect, licensed to practice in Puerto Rico with over 23 years of experience in the fields of architecture and construction.

In 2017, Monique joined Álvarez-Díaz & Villalón as the Design Studio Manager and Senior Project Designer. In 2018, she was appointed as the firm’s President and Chief Operating Officer. As a hands-on principal, Monique is personally responsible for the daily office operations, customer relations, studio schedule, business development and staffing. Under her collaborative leadership, AD&V has successfully delivered projects in the commercial, institutional, residential and interior design sectors with superior results. Monique’s daily work is focused on her commitment to organizational growth, improved performance, value, making a positive impact and setting AD&V apart as a leading architecture and design services firm in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and the United States.

Monique graduated from the University of Michigan with a Masters in Architecture in 1996. Afterwards, she interned in various sole practitioner architecture firms in Puerto Rico gaining ample experience in residential, institutional, commercial and hospitality design projects such as the Paradisus Coco Beach. In July 1999, Monique joined the architecture and engineering design firm of UNIPRO Architects and Engineers as Project Architect, where she served as lead and/or supporting architect for multiple federal, industrial and pharmaceutical projects such as Medtronic, Janssen, Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Bard, VS Group San Juan Industrial, the U.S. Postal Service, the FBI and Veterans Administration.

In 2003, Monique started a sole architectural practice where she served as a consultant, project manager and/or project architect to the local architecture and engineering firms of UNIPRO, Entech DPM., Benitez Ramos and Associates and Stantec. During this period, Monique designed projects such as Prados del Sur Shopping Center in Santa Isabel, as well as several retail stores and El Morro Fortress Wall Promenade for the U.S. National Park Service.

Until her commitment to AD&V in 2017, Monique continued to develop a consistent list of private clients and projects including Baldwin School of Puerto Rico, Los Angeles Memorial Park, the San Juan Superintendence of Catholic Schools, as well as various residential and commercial client projects.

Monique has ample experience in Design Management, Code Compliance, Project Management and Construction Administration. Her professionalism, knowledgeable performance, and excellent delivery years throughout her career has gained her an unquestionable reputation and good will.

In 1994, she worked as an intern for the State Historic Preservation Office of Puerto Rico and from 1997-98 as a Teaching Assistant for the History of Architecture Course at the New School of Architecture of the Polytechnic Institute of Puerto Rico.

Since 1996, Monique has been an active member of El Colegio de Arquitectos y Arquitectos Paisajistas de Puerto Rico and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). She is a former board member of the AIA Puerto Rico Chapter. As part of her commitment to social transformation, she currently sits on the Board of Escuela con Causa, in Guaynabo, the first charter in Puerto Rico.
