Reshaping society’s health and wellness through the power of architectural design.

There’s more to architecture than just buildings! Discover how great architectural design can enhance your quality of life and transform your experience of the world.

As architects, it is our responsibility to acknowledge the integral connection between our designs and the impact they have on our communities. A great structure doesn’t just concentrate on the execution of a complex model, but rather in the wellness that the buildings can contribute to others.

The spaces where we live and work can have a significant effect on our physical and emotional wellbeing.  Thoughtful, innovative design can shape how we feel and what we experience within a physical space.

HEALING PEOPLE THROUGH ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

In Michael Murphy’s 2016 Ted Talk, Architecture that’s built to heal, he raises the important question “why does architecture only serve so few?”.  This brave challenge has helped generate global awareness in support of the creation of holistic designs that provide the well-being in communities around the world.

In order to develop architectural design for health and wellness, Murphy implements 4 practices known the LO-FAB system (Locally Fabricated Way of Building).

  1. Hiring Locally

  2. Sourcing regionally

  3. Training where you can

  4. Investing in dignity

BENEFITS OF THE LO-FAB MOVEMENT

After the construction of the Butaro District Hospital in Rwanda, Mass Design Group has gained worldwide recognition for their innovative approach regarding the design and building process for the health of others, thus the creation of the LO-FAB Movement. Their focus is centered on promoting ingenious design ideas that can be executed by incorporating local workers and instruments in the construction. That’s why the LO-FAB movement repetitively states that “How we build, and who builds, matters”.

The LO-FAB Movement has proved that by integrating local workers and locally sourced instruments in the building process, the construction process is significantly accelerated, and at the same time, more economically efficient in the long run.

ARCHITECTURE AS A TRANSFORMATIVE ENGINE FOR CHANGE

In architecture, aesthetic decisions can be responsibly made to impact and improve people’s health conditions. By implementing innovative ideas in our designs, we can serve the diverse needs of others. Architectural design can do wonders for those in need of physical and physiological health. These holistic designs deliver hope for the creation of more eco-friendly and efficient structures that provide life-changing benefits to communities around the globe.

THE NEW ERA OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IS HERE.

Murphy’s ending statement, “Great architecture gives us hope. Great architecture can heal”, functions as the main objective every architect should have when creating a design.

At AD&V, we embrace the importance of wellness, not merely as an idea— but more as a way of life.
